A groove is a long slot cut or machined into a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal hot rolled into steel, often to provide a location for another component.

A groove is also a long slot hot rolled into steel rail to guide to a tram wheel flange.

A groove is also the smaller diameter of a pulley or of a double flanged wheel

In architecture the grooves cut into stonework as decoration are referred to as "fluted".
