Grant County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population was 49,597. Its county seat is Lancaster6.

Geography


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,065 km² (1,183 mi²). 2,973 km² (1,148 mi²) of it is land and 92 km² (35 mi²) of it (3.00%) is water.

Demographics


As of the census² of 2000, there were 49,597 people, 18,465 households, and 12,390 families residing in the county. The population density was 17/km² (43/mi²). There were 19,940 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.23% White, 0.52% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 18,465 households out of which 30.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.10% were married couples living together, 7.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% were non-families. 26.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the county, the population was spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 14.60% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 103.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.00 males.
