Gordon Cameron Jackson, OBE (December 19, 1923 - January 15, 1990), was a prolific Scottish character actor, best known for his roles in the film The Great Escape, the spy thriller The Ipcress File, and the television series, Upstairs Downstairs (for which he won a best supporting actor Emmy Award) and for playing George Cowley in the 1970s TV series The Professionals.

Jackson also received a Logie Award (Australian) for his work in the TV adaptation of A Town Like Alice. One of his last major film appearances was in The Shooting Party (1985).

Jackson was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was married to Scottish actress Rona Anderson.

Gordon Jackson died in London on January 15th, 1990 of bone cancer.

Trivia


  • Even though the role won him an Emmy, Jackson reportedly despised his role of Hudson the butler on Upstairs, Downstairs.
  • Jackson was well admired by the cast and crew on The Professionals. He was said by everyone to be incredibly easy to work with.
  • In 1981, his wife Rona made an appearance on The Professionals episode Cry Wolf. It was kept a surprise for him until the day of shooting that she would appear on screen with him.
