The Girl Scouts of the USA have five ranks or levels of advancement: Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, and Senior. Girl Scouts advance, or "bridge", through age requirement instead of badge requirement.
Daisy Girl Scouts
Daisy is the starting level of Girl Scouting. Named for
Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low herself, Daisy scouts are ages 5-6 (
Kindergarten-Grade 1). The rank Daisy was created in the
1980s so girls could get involved at a younger age. They typically meet in groups of 5-10 with one or two leaders. Daisy Scouts earn Learning Petals and Participation patches for their uniform which consists of a light blue tunic. Daisies do badge work from the
Daisy Girl Scout Activity Book.
Brownie Girl Scouts
Brownie is the next rank above Daisy. The rank of Brownie was created in the
1930s along with Intermediate and Senior to help place scouts into appropriate age groups. Brownies are typically ages 6-8 (Grade 1-Grade 3). Brownies earn triangular shaped Brownie Girl Scout Try-Its. The Brownie uniform consists of a brown vest or sash. Brownies go by the
Brownie Girl Scout Handbook and earn badges from the
Try-Its for Brownie Girl Scouts book.
Junior Girl Scouts
Junior is the next level above Brownie. Juniors are ages ages 8-11 (Grade 3-Grade 6). Junior Girl Scouting was created in
1963 as a response to the social unrest of the
1960s. Thirty years before, Juniors were called Intermediate Scouts. Juniors earn Badges and sport green vests or sashes as uniforms. They also use the
Junior Girl Scout Handbook and earn badges from the
Junior Girl Scout Badge Book. Juniors are also eligible to earn the prestigious
Bronze Award.
Cadette Girl Scouts
Cadette Girl Scouts are the next level up from Junior. Cadettes are typically ages ages 11-14 (Grade 6-Grade 9). The rank was created in 1963 along with the Junior Rank making Girl Scouts of the USA a four rank program. Cadettes earn
Interest Projects and wear blue sashes or vests as uniforms. Cadettes use the
Girl Scout Handbook and earn badges from
Interest Projects for Girls 11-17. The Cadette level also is the start of the
Studio 2B program. Cadettes can opt to use the
STUDIO 2B Focus books and earn charms for their Studio 2B charm bracelets or slides for their uniforms. Cadettes are eligible to earn the prestigious
Silver Award
Senior Girl Scouts
Senior is the highest rank of active Girl Scouting. Seniors are typically ages 14-17 (Grade 10-Grade 12). The Senior rank was created in the 1930s along with the Brownie and Intermediate ranks. Senior Girl Scouts earn Interest projects and use the same books as Cadettes. Seniors can chose to wear their blue Cadette sash or vest or a similar khaki colored vest or sash. Seniors are also part of Studio 2B and can earn Charms or Slides from the
Focus Books. Senior scouts are eligible to earn the
Gold Award, Girl Scouting's highest honor.
