The Gibraltar bridge is a proposed construction project involving the creation of a bridge spanning the Straits of Gibraltar.
A joint American and British team of engineers are investigating the feasibility of building a bridge of a combination suspension-truss design. Such a bridge would dwarf all other bridges previously built, being 1250m high (over 3000 feet) and 16.2 km in length (approx. 10 miles). The 1979 science fiction novel The Fountains of Paradise by Arthur C. Clarke featured such a bridge.
Discussions are underway between the Spanish and Moroccan governments; a tunnel going under the Straits is also being discussed as an alternative to the bridge.
The proposed Gibraltar Bridge was featured on an episode of Discovery Channel's Extreme Engineering.
