Germanwings is a low-cost airline based in Cologne, Germany. It operates services to over 53 destinations in Europe; 8 within Germany and 45 destinations in Europe. Its main base is Cologne Bonn Airport, with secondary bases at Stuttgart Airport, Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport and Hamburg Airport.
History
The airline was established in 1997 (as "Eurowings Flug GmbH") and started operations on 27 October 2002. It is wholly owned by Eurowings. Its main competitors are more established no-frills carriers such as Ryanair and easyJet as well as the other recent low-fares start ups such as HLX.com and dba.
Services
Germanwings' primary bases are Cologne Bonn Airport, Stuttgart Airport, Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport and Hamburg Airport, from which it serves 49 other cities throughout Europe as well as Turkey and Russia.

New Routes
It will inaugurate the following new routes using an Airbus 319:
- Cologne - Belgrade on September 2nd 2006: 3 flight a week.
- Berlin (Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport) - Zweibrücken in September 2006.
- Hamburg - Moscow (Vnukovo International Airport) in November 2006
- Berlin (Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport) - Saint Petersburg in November 2006.
It will give up its Hamburg - Stockholm route on 1 September 2006.

In July 2006, Germanwings fleet age is 6.8 years old.
On 7 December 2005 the airline signed an agreement to purchase 18 Airbus A319 aircraft (with a further 12 options). These are their first direct orders with Airbus and deliveries will start in July 2006 until 2008 (ref: Aero International, June 2006). During winter 2004-2005 Germanwings leased two Boeing 717 from Aerolineas Baleares to test this type, but no order was made after.
