Georgia Championship Wrestling was a promotion whose program aired in the 1970s and 1980s on American cable television's Turner Broadcasting System (TBS). The show, hosted by Gordon Solie, was recorded in WTBS' studios at 1050 Techwood Drive and featured professional wrestling matches along the lines of the former World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Some big names who came in and out of Georgia Championship Wrestling included Mr. Wrestling II, Jake Roberts, Dusty Rhodes ("The American Dream"), Ole Anderson, Larry Zbyszko, Bob and Brad Armstrong, Masked Superstar, Ricky Steamboat, Ted Dibiase and Ronnie Garvin.

Another promotion known as Georgia Championship Wrestling was formed in the 2000s, but later renamed Great Championship Wrestling.

Black Saturday

On July 14, 1984, a.k.a. Black Saturday, GCW ceased to exist when Vince McMahon bought the promotion and the time slot for his World Wrestling Federation promotion, with Freddie Miller the only GCW announcer to stay on board. In mid-1985, McMahon sold the Saturday night time slot (though not the actual company known as Georgia Championship Wrestling) to Jim Crockett, Jr., whose Charlotte, North Carolina-based company, Jim Crockett Promotions, took over production of the TBS-based "World Championship Wrestling" television programs. In 2001, McMahon would gain rights to Crockett's tape library--to augment his own tape library--through his purchase of certain assets belonging to WCW (though he did not buy World Championship Wrestling, Inc. itself).

Trivia

A few months before GCW was sold to McMahon, GCW renamed their TBS wrestling show World Championship Wrestling. When Jim Crockett Promotions bought the time slot from McMahon, they elected to use the World Championship Wrestling name originated by GCW.
