Gaston Defferre (1910-1986) was a french socialist, member of the Section Française de l'Internationale Ouvrière (SFIO). He was member of the parliament (1945-1958, 1962-1986) and mayor of Marseille (1944-1945, 1953-1986). He was the socialist candidate for the french presidency, with the support of Pierre Mendès-France, who would have been his Prime minister had he been elected. But he was soundly defeated, scoring only 5% of the vote, the lowest score for a french socialist candidate ever. His failure prompted the birth of the new french socialist party, soon to be taken over by François Mitterrand.
