The "Gang of Nine" was a group of IBM competitors who came together in 1988 to build the EISA architecture, to compete with IBM's MCA. These companies were AST Research, Compaq Computer, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, NEC, Olivetti, Tandy, WYSE, and Zenith Data Systems.
