Game portals are distribution channels for games. People can play or download games from a portal and/or buy it through a gameportal. One reason for using gameportals is publicity: the top listings of games in gameportals receive millions of downloads and/or gamers that want to play online - and generate much revenues. It is true that portals generally typically take 50-65% net sales share, but even then the rest of the share provides a good income especially for top game publishers.
Gameportals contain online casual- and skillgames. These games are a growing genre of internet games. The top publishers of these games include: PopCap, Zylom , ZiGiZ.com, SkillExtreme.com, WorldWinner.com, King.com, Skill7, Skilljam (a Company co-founded by Mark Elfenbein and Justin Beckett in 2000), GameDuell, GameTrust and GameAccount.com. They allow visitors to compete for money in games of skill or play various casual games online.
Gameportals became very popular in 2005. Following poker sites, online casinos learned that users want to play against each other.
