The pound was the currency of the Gambia between 1907 and 1971. Until 1966, Gambia used the West African pound, after which it issued its own currency. In 1971, the dalasi replaced the pound at a rate of 1 pound = 5 dalasi, i.e., 1 dalasi = 4 shillings.

The coinage issued which have Queen Elizabeth the seconds portrait on the obverse and individual design on the reverse, denomination's include:

  • 1 pennyof 1966 made of bronze with a native sailing boat.
  • 3 pence of 1966 made of Aluminium bronze with a pheasant?.
  • 6 pence of 1966 made of cupper/nickel with 3 peanuts.
  • 1 shilling of 1966 made of cupper/nickel with a cycad design.
  • 2 shillings of 1966 made of cupper/nickel with a bull's head.
  • 4 shillings of 1966 made of cupper/nickel with a crocodile.
  • 8 shillings of 1970 made out of cupper/nickel with a hippopotomus.

Banknotes come in 10 shillings, 1 Pound and 5 Pounds.

  • 10 shillings has a sailing boat with a forest background on the front and the back natives tending their crops. Issued colour is green.
  • 1 pound banknote has on the front is the same for the 10 shilling note. Reverse has labourers working at a worf. Issue colour is red.
  • 5 pounds on the front is the same as the 10 shillings. Back has a picture of people using hand powered machinery. Issue colour is blue.
