Fotolog is a registered trademark of Fotolog, Inc. One of the oldest photoblog web sites, with over 3 million users, Fotolog.com (recently changed from Fotolog.net) is a way for users to share pictures and stories. A 'friends and favourites' system adds to the sense of community, and makes it easy to browse the website by quickly being able to see which of your preferred pages have recently uploaded. Each user can control the colour and appearance of their page, and write a caption under their photograph.

Choices

The website offers both a free and subscription version. The free version is ad supported, and limits users to uploading one picture a day, and having only 10 comments (in their "guestbook"). Paying members, known as "Gold Camera patrons" can upload 6 pictures a day, have 100 comments per photo and have better customer support. Recent changes mean that Gold Cam members can comment on any guestbook that is full. Other new features include customized photo-headings, and having the most recent image appear besides the members name when commenting on other Flogs.

History

The site has had frequent technical problems, partly due to the rapid growth of the site. Indeed, on December 10, 2005, the site stated that only "Fotolog is currently able to accept 1,000 new free members from each country each day", up from 500 a day previously. According to Fotolog co-founder Scott Heiferman, recent upgrades have made the site much faster and as of November 16th, 2005, Fotolog is now generating 750 million pageviews a month *. Scott kept his promiss, and in mid 2006, 10,000 people per day, per country were allowed to join the community.

The site has improved considerably. Two years ago, free members could not upload during peak hours, and only 500 people a day (per country) were welcomed in.

Fotolog recently received a large investment of 2.4 million dollars from BV Capital *. This investment has made possible the recent upgrades to the site.

Its rapid growth was most notable in Latin America, and although the site is american and in english, the majority of its users come from Brazil. The success promtpted many other websites to appear and compete, however, in Latin America, the word Fotolog is almost universally understood to mean any Photoblog.

Miscellany

Users, known as 'fotologgers', often refer to their pages as 'flogs'.

Brazil is home to the majority of the users on Fotolog.com, although other South American countries are catching up.

As of June 16, 2006, Fotolog.com had:

3,537,481 Fotolog Members

116,873,131 Photos

The 3 millionth user and 100 millionth photo were created on April 15, 2006
