Filter is a TV show on G4 which follows a countdown format. After being cancelled in December 2005, it was recently announced that Filter is scheduled to return in June 2006. However, as the show was previously predominantly focused on video games, the new incarnation will be slanted towards other topics.
History
Filter was one of the 13 original series to debut with G4. The original focus of the show was video games, and each episode covered a different genre, such as sports or RPGs. Each week a new theme was chosen and then viewers chose the top ten to be featured on the show. The top two games would be put in a Filter Face-off, where the winner was reavealed. Some of the most memorable shows were top ten Final Fantasy games, and top ten platformers of all-time.
After the purchase of TechTV, Filter was revamped, and focused on other things besides just video games. The "Tech Toss-up" was added where new gadgets such as cellphones and mp3 players were covered. Besides video games Filter also began to cover other media such as movies.
In December 2005, as a part of the retooling of G4 to cover a broader male interest and not just video games, Filter was cancelled. Running for four years and making 116 episodes, it was one of the few shows to have been on the network since its launch.
In April 2006, it was announced that the show would be returning, with Beth Ostrosky as the host.
Hosts
Current
Former
- Diane Mizota: After leaving G4 Diane joined Revision3 and now stars in a technology show that focuses on gadgets and gear (similar to Fresh Gear) called InDigital, with former Filter co-hosts Han Choi and Andrew Hawn.
Cancellation
- On December 9, 2005, it was announced by Diane Mizota that the show had been cancelled:
- Alas, my dear Filter fans, all good things must come to an end. Filter has been cancelled by the powers that be, and I just wanted to let you fans know how much I've enjoyed working on this show. I couldn't ask for a more supportive, enthusiastic and sweet fan base than you have been, and if you've enjoyed watching the show even half as much as I've enjoyed making it, then I will consider this a massive success. Our last episode EVER will air on December 19th. I will miss you and I thank you for your support and kindness, the show just wouldn't have been the same without you. You can always keep tabs on where I'll show up next on www.dianemizota.com. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are the best.
Revamps
2005
- The show was revamped in 2005 to include more pop culture lists such as threatrical and DVD movie releases, music concerts, and consumer technology. A segment called Net to Know showcases correspondent John Walsh's top three websites of the week.
2006
- On April 18, 2006, it was announced on The Howard Stern Show that Filter would return on Saturday, June 3, 2006 with host Beth Ostrosky. In addition, Filter's top-ten format has been slightly altered; the show will still be a countdown, but said list need not contain exactly ten entries.G4 was heavily criticized for putting Beth O. as the new host because many Filter fans felt that G4 was focusing on getting men interested rather than talking about the show,& felt like she doesn't know what she is doing.
Current Focus
The 2006 relaunch brought upon many changes. All segments not pertaining to the countdown have been removed, and the focus of the countdowns on the show have become much different. Topics for countdowns include pop-culture events, "sex, parties and women", cars and auto tech, male culture, and other topics pertaining to the interest of the network's new demographic.
