Fabric is a nightclub in Central London, United Kingdom. It is one of the largest and most popular night clubs in London and widely regarded as one of the best dance music venues *. It is located opposite Smithfields meat market on the northern fringe of the City of London.
History
The club founded by Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie was opened in October 1999. It has three separate rooms with independent sound systems. A unique feature of the club is its vibrating floor in Room 1. Known as a "bodysonic" dancefloor, sections of the floors are attached to 400 bass transducers emitting bass frequencies of the music being played, allowing clubbers to feel the music through bass frequencies transmitted into their skeletons via their feet.
Style
Musical genres played there vary from night to night, with house, tech house and techno DJs and live acts appearing on Saturdays, for the self-titled and Fabric night and drum and bass hip hop and breakbeats DJs and acts on Fridays, for FabricLive. Fridays and Saturdays are in-house promoted while other nights of the week use outside promoters. The poly-sexual Sunday DTPM has been a long running night at the venue.
Performances
Many well-known club nights have moved to Fabric over the past years, tempted by the size and reputation of the venue, including Tyrant and Night of Tru Playaz. Resident DJ's have remained the same since the launch with James Lavelle and Ali B on Friday's FabricLive and Craig Richards and Terry Francis on Saturday's Fabric. The club has had many top DJs play, including Sasha, John Digweed, Chemical Brothers, Carl Cox, Juan Atkins, DJ Hype, Fabio, Grooverider, Adam Freeland, and Dave Clarke. As well as booking these more established names, the club provides a take on the current state of electronic music by booking less established names on the UK and International circuit. It also has strong affiliations with several labels such as Playhouse, BPitch Control, Kompakt and Sender, which use label showcases to highlight their up and coming talent.
Trivia
To provide a means for the club to highlight its diverse music policy, a CD series was launched in 2001. These are released as Fabric and FabricLive on alternative months, featuring artists from both of the nights on rotation such as Craig Richards, Michael Mayer, Swayzak, Scratch Perverts, Adam Freeland, Ivan Smagghe, Terry Francis, Stacey Pullen, John Digweed and The Plump DJs to name but a few.
