Lieutenant Ezri Dax (played by Nicole de Boer) is a character in the seventh and final season of Deep Space Nine.

Overview

A Trill Starfleet officer, Ensign Ezri Tigan was assigned to the USS Destiny as assistant ship's counselor, upon leaving Starfleet Academy. She had no interest in becoming joined with a Trill symbiont.

After Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax was killed aboard Deep Space Nine, the Dax symbiont was saved by Dr. Julian Bashir and sent to Trill aboard the Destiny for re-joining. However, the symbiont became gravely ill during the flight, and as the only Trill on board, Ezri Tigan was asked to join with Dax in order to save its life. Ezri is Dax's eighth official host, but is in reality the tenth, as one host (Joran) was covered up by the Symbiosis Commission, and another (Verad) was an unauthorized host that briefly took the symbiont by force.

Upon joining, Ezri was assigned to Deep Space Nine and granted a field promotion to Lieutenant (junior grade). She served as counselor, but also distinguished herself as a science officer (using Jadzia's knowledge, via the symbiont) and in combat during the Dominion War.

Jadzia had been married to Commander Worf, who at first refused to even speak to Ezri, convinced that Jadzia had gone on to Sto-Vo-Kor and could no longer exist through the Dax symbiont. However the two later became friends and, briefly, lovers as they considered renewing the relationship Jadzia had enjoyed with Worf (despite it being a major "taboo" in Trill culture for a symbiont to renew relationships from past lives).

Towards the end of the series, Ezri began a liaison with Dr. Bashir.

Trivia

In the (non-canon) novels which followed the television series, Ezri remained on Deep Space Nine, moving from Counseling to Command. Following a mission on the Trill homeworld, she and Doctor Bashir ended their romance, deciding to remain close friends.
