Ellen Churchill Semple (January 8, 1863, Louisville, Kentucky – May 8, 1932, West Palm Beach, Florida) was an American geographer. She was a prominent supporter of environmental determinism, a theory that the physical environment, rather than social conditions, determines culture. Semple studied with German geographer Friedrich Ratzel before coming to teach at Clark University.
