Ekerö Municipality is a Swedish municipality in Stockholm County, in central Sweden. The name comes from the island Ekerö, and literally means Oak island.

The municipality consists of 140 islands in Lake Mälaren. The largest ones, distinguished on the map, are Adelsö, Munsö, Ekerö, Färingsö and Lovö.

Heritage

The municipality contains two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One is Birka, an old Viking village, and the other is Drottningholm – the Royal Palace – and its surroundings.

Birka is situated to the west, on a small island south of Adelsö, while Drottningholm is situated on the eastern island of Lovö.

Other historical sights of interest are several rune stones and other Viking remains, eight medieval churches, and old towns.

Nature

There are several outdoor activities that can be enjoyed, such as fishing and bicycling, as the nature is always nearby. Each of the islands also offers distinctive experiences and sights.

Communication

Ekero has substantial connections to inner Stockholm. Some of the major bus routes to Ekero include 177, 302, 303, 309, 312, 316, 317, and 336 from Brommaplan, where connection is available from the Green Line of the Subway. The county road 261 offers connection to motorists from Brommaplan and other western suburbs of Stockholm
