Eggheads is a BBC quiz game show presented by Dermot Murnaghan. In it, five British quiz game show champions compete against members of the public. The Eggheads are:
There are four main rounds, in which the challengers are given a category, and choose one of their players to play an Egghead of their choice, and they choose whether or not to go first - all aspects designed to give the challengers an advantage. They are asked 3 multiple-choice questions each, with non-multiple-choice questions asked in pairs should the first set of three result in a tie. The losing player is not allowed to compete in the final, meaning that a dominant team could have a 5-1 advantage in the final, in which all remaining players can confer on the (general knowledge) questions.
Should the challengers win, they score £1,000 plus a further £1,000 for each day the Eggheads had previously gone undefeated. Defeat usually leads Murnaghan to ask "Congratulations Eggheads, can anyone beat you?". The Eggheads have a tendency to show off somewhat, often giving extra information or using obscure cross-references to come to their answers.
The show has been running for three series, represented by the same five Eggheads. The first team to defeat the Eggheads was the Unicorn Inn in Canterbury, Kent who won the final round on the thirteenth sudden death tie break. At the time, this was the most money to be won on a quiz show on BBC television.
Following the show broadcast on 2 June 2006, the Eggheads have won the last 32 games, which is a record for the team.
The show, which is made by 12 Yard Productions, is currently being repeated in an early-evening slot on BBC2, as the current series has ended.
