Dystopia are a crust punk/doom metal band from California, USA.

Style

They have a distinct sound in the genre that is strongly influenced by stoner metal and the bleak imagery of crust. Their songs often begin with ponderous, tuned-down riffs or depressing samples. The lyrics often deal with human emotion and political issues such as, environmentalism, racial equality, apocalypse, animal rights, and veganism/vegetarianism. Unlike most crust punk bands, they also have a following among death metal fans, probably because of their nihilistic lyrics and heavy sound.

Formation and Members

The band was formed in Orange County, California in 1992. Members included Todd Keisling (bass), who also played in grindcore band Confrontation, Matt Parillo (guitar, vocals) originally of Cantankerous and Mindrot (Relapse Records), and Dino Sommese (drums/vocals) of Carcass-esque grind band Carcinogen. Original Dystopia vocalist, Dan Kaufman, also played in Mindrot.
