Discovery is the 2001 sophomore album by Daft Punk. It marks a shift in the sound from the Chicago house that they were previously known for to disco-style synth-pop, a notably jarring move for fans of Homework. The immediate change in aesthetic initially caused some critics to pan the album, but it would eventually gain praise in later years. The album also provided itself as a soundtrack to the anime movie Interstella 5555.

Two cult hits were spawned from this album: "One More Time" (featuring Romanthony), and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". The song "Face to Face" (featuring Todd Edwards) reached #1 on the Billboard Club chart in 2004.

Interpretation of name

Some people have interpreted that the Discovery album means "very disco" due to the album having a disco feeling. However, according to an interview with Remix Magazine Online, Thomas Bangalter states:

Also, there's a lot of sampling present on this album. The sampled tracks reinforce Thomas Bangalter's statement about Discovery's theme. These are all of the known sampled tracks on the album:

Song Sample used in song
"One More Time""More Spell On You" by Eddie Johns
"Aerodynamic""Il Macquillage Lady" by Sister Sledge
"Digital Love""I Love You More" by George Duke
"Harder Better Faster Stronger""Cola Bottle Baby" by Edwin Birdsong
"Crescendolls""Can You Imagine" by The Imperials
"Superheroes""Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed" by Barry Manilow

Despite the heavy sampling, Daft Punk actually work with their sampled music. Instead of just using the samples, they add or build on to the original sample. * Daft Punk has proven this in a later song, "Robot Rock" (from their Human After All album). For the music video, both Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo are actually playing the sampled loop that is the basis of the song. Thomas Bangalter is playing the sampled guitar loop with a double-neck guitar and Guy-Manuel is playing the drums part of the song.
