Diane Lane (born January 22 1965) is an Academy Award-nominated American actress.
Biography
Early life
Lane was born in
New York City, New York. The daughter of acting coach
Burt Lane and singer/centerfold
Colleen Farrington, Lane was raised by her father after her parents' divorce when she was a baby. She began acting professionally at the age of six at the La Mama Experimental Theatre in New York.
Career
Lane was chosen from a casting call to perform in Andrei Şerban's "Medea." She subsequently starred in his films "Electra", "The Trojan Women", "The Good Woman of Szechuan", and "As You Like It" within the next five years. At 13, she made her film debut opposite
Laurence Olivier in
A Little Romance, and was featured on the cover of
Time. The following year, she starred in the true story-based film
Touched by Love as a girl crippled by
cerebral palsy who is encouraged to write to
Elvis Presley. Lane is one of the few
child performers to have made a successful transition into adult roles. In 2002 she was nominated for an
Academy Award as
Best Actress for her performance in
Unfaithful, and was honoured for her work in that film by The New York Film Critics and The National Society of Film Critics.
Earlier on, Lane made a hit with audiences in the back to back cult hits The Outsiders and Rumble Fish and for a time was designated a member of the so-called "Brat pack." However the two films that should have catapulted her to star status, Streets of Fire and The Cotton Club, were both box office flops and her career languished as a result. In 1999's A Walk on the Moon, however, she began to gain serious attention in more mature roles.
Personal life
Lane was married to actor
Christopher Lambert from
1988 to
1994. They had one child, Eleanor Jasmine Lambert, born
September 5 1993. Lane married actor
Josh Brolin on
August 14,
2004. On
December 20 of that year, Lane called the police after an altercation with Brolin and he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. Lane declined to press the charge and the couple's spokesperson characterized the incident as a misunderstanding.
