The Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), as of 2000, consists of 5 counties, all in Iowa: Polk, Dallas, Warren, Madison, and Guthrie. The 2000 population of these counties is 481,394 and 2005 estimate of 522,454. Counties often included in the metro are Jasper, Marion, Story and Boone. Marion and Jasper counties are now officially a part of the metro, Story and Boone are not (as of 2006). If all nine counties are included in the metro the population estimate is 699,666.
