Delfzijl (Gronings: Delfsiel) is a municipality and city in the northeast of the Netherlands. It is situated on the left bank of the River Ems estuary, which forms the border with Germany.
In the last municipal elections (March 7th 2006) a large portion of the population (30% of the people who voted) voted, but did not vote for a particular person or party, thereby giving a 'blank' vote to show their anger about current politics going on in the harbour town. In the past few years the town moved from one crisis into another, which resulted in the resignation of two mayors and several council members. Delfzijl is therefore generally considered as very difficult to govern.
