Dachau is a town in southern Germany, in the federal state of Bavaria. Located at , just 20 km away from Munich, it has become a popular housing area for people working in Munich, and now has roughly 40,000 inhabitants. The town has a historic town centre, with a castle built in the 18th century. Dachau was founded in the 8th century, and was the home of many artists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The writer Ludwig Thoma was born there.

Dachau is best known for the proximity of the relatively well-preserved site of the infamous Dachau concentration camp, the first large-scale concentration camp in Germany, converted from an old gunpowder factory by the Nazi regime in 1933.
