Several bird species exhibit prominent feathered crests upon their heads. Generally used for display purposes, the crest can be either fixed or erectile, depending upon the species in question. Cockatoos and cockatiels, for example possess crests which may be raised or lowered at will and are used as a method of visually communicating with other members of the same species.
