The Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Bloomfield Hills, MI, is located near Detroit, Michigan and is an influential school of architecture and design. Founded in 1932 by philanthropists George Gough Booth and wife Ellen Scripps Booth, it is a part of the larger, world-renowned Cranbrook Educational Community founded by the couple.
The Cranbrook Academy of Art was originally headed by Eliel Saarinen and migrated design from the Arts and Crafts movement through the international style. Famous students include Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames, Ray Eames, Maija Grotell, Ralph Rapson, Eero Saarinen, Ed Bacon and Florence Knoll (did not graduate).
The school, currently conferring Master of Fine Arts and Master of Architecture degrees, offers unique academy-style learning where students in each department study directly under one artist-in-residence.
