Concentric exercise involves the contraction of a muscle as it shortens in length and develops tension. For example, the upward movement of a dumbbell in a bicep curl is a concentric contraction.

Concentric exercise is the opposite of eccentric exercise. The distinction between concentric and eccentric exercise is important to the understanding of Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
