Commercial Township is a township in Cumberland County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 5,259.

Laurel Lake and Port Norris are census-designated places and unincorporated areas located within Commercial Township.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 89.4 km² (34.5 mi²). 84.1 km² (32.5 mi²) of it is land and 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²) of it (5.91%) is water.

Commercial Township borders Maurice River Township, Millville, Downe Township, and the Delaware Bay.

Demographics


As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,259 people, 1,873 households, and 1,367 families residing in the township. The population density was 62.6/km² (162.0/mi²). There were 2,171 housing units at an average density of 25.8/km² (66.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 82.98% White, 13.42% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.01% from other races, and 1.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.86% of the population.

There were 1,873 households out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 16.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% were non-families. 21.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the township the population was spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $34,960, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $35,030 versus $21,610 for females. The per capita income for the township was $14,663. About 13.0% of families and 15.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.3% of those under age 18 and 11.9% of those age 65 or over.
