Colemak is an alternative keyboard layout designed for English. It was created in January 2006. It is advertised as being better than both the QWERTY and the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard layouts.

Design principles

  • The Colemak keyboard layout places the 10 most frequently typed letters on the home row.
  • It attempts to minimize pressing keys in succession using the same finger.
  • It keeps some keys in their QWERTY position to allow easier transition from QWERTY in comparison to Dvorak.
  • It attempts to minimize jumping over the home row.
  • It attempts to balance the load on each finger according to its dexterity and strength.
  • It attempts to minimize the total finger distance.
  • The caps lock is remapped to backspace to avoid moving the hands from the home position to correct errors.
