Classic Media, Inc. is an independent American production company/distributor of family programming.
Classic Media was formed in 1998 after it acquired the Golden Books Family Entertainment division, which had lost money.
Their library consists of properties which they acquired from other in-name-only companies, including Harvey Comics, Jay Ward Productions, and many others.
Among its holdings are Rankin-Bass' pre-1974 library (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, etc.), the Jack Wrather catalog (The Lone Ranger, Lassie, The Green Hornet), the Harvey Comics animated catalog (Casper the Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich, Baby Huey, etc.), Rocky and Bullwinkle, Underdog, the French-Belgian comics catalog (The Adventures of Tintin and Blake and Mortimer), most of the UPA animated catalog (Mr. Magoo, Gerald McBoing-Boing, etc.),Ragdoll Productions (Lamb Chop's Play Along,and The Charlie Horse Music Pizza) and the Christian animated video producer Big Idea Productions (VeggieTales).
Classic Media currently releases its videos through Sony Wonder and Rhino Home Video.
The primary goal for "Smart Place" will be to "champion literacy and values in the children's television category" *. Smart Place will air weekdays on i and Saturday mornings on NBC beginning in September, Telemundo on Saturday beginning in October and Sunday mornings beginning in January 2007, and a 24-hour digital television network carried on one of i's digital channels beginning in September.
