A clarence was a type of carriage popular in the 19th century. It was a four-wheeled horse-driven vehicle with room for four passengers and a glass front. The driver sat at the front, outside the carriage. It was named after Prince William, Duke of Clarence and St Andrews, later to become King William IV.
