It is named after its major settlement, Leeds, which is also the administrative seat. To the south and west, the borders of the district cover mostly urban and suburban areas. To the east and north, the district includes some countryside and many other urban and suburban areas.

History


The metropolitan borough was formed in 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, from the area of the former County Borough of Leeds, Aireborough Urban District, Horsforth Urban District, the Municipal Borough Morley, Otley Urban District, the Municipal Borough of Pudsey, Rothwell Urban District and parts of Tadcaster Rural District and Wetherby Rural District.
