Chestnut is a color of horse, consisting of a red or brownish coat, with a mane and tail the same color or lighter in color than the coat. When the horse has a lighter mane and tail, it is said to be "chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail."

Chestnut is a common color, seen in almost every breed of horse. Some breeds, such as the Budyonny are exculsively chestnut. Chestnut is also a base-coat color, needed to form other colors such as bay, palomino, and cremello.

Chestnut vs. Sorrel

Sorrel is color similar to chestnut, and the terms are often interchanged. Most consider a "sorrel" to be a "chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail." However, some breed associations used the terms chestnut and sorrel to describe two different shades of red-based coats. Generally it does not matter which term is used.
