"Chef Aid" is episode 2-14 of Comedy Central's animated series South Park. It originally aired on October 7, 1998.
Synopsis
Chef discovers that Alanis Morissette's (fictional) hit song "Stinky Britches" is the same song he wrote years previously, before abandoning his musical aspirations. Chef contacts a "major record company" executive, seeking only to have his name credited as the composer of "Stinky Britches." Chef's claim is substantiated by a twenty-year-old recording of Chef performing the song. The record company refuses, and furthermore hires Johnnie Cochran, who files a lawsuit against Chef for harassment. Cochran triumphantly employs the Chewbacca Defense, resulting in a massive jury award in favor of the record company. Chef is left with the choice between paying the award within a few days, or going to jail.
The boys try to help Chef by rounding up various musicians whose careers have been boosted by Chef's advice to hold a benefit concert. The record company executive tries to sabotage the concert, but the outpouring of support for Chef touches Johnnie Cochran, whose heart "grew three sizes that day." Cochran switches sides, successfully defending Chef in a new trial.
Kenny's Death
Ozzy Osbourne bites his head off.
Trivia
- The song Stinky Britches was also sung by Marilyn Manson in the episode Prehistoric Ice Man.
- The title of this episode is a reference to Live Aid.
- Music Acts trying to help Chef include Joe Strummer, Ozzy Osbourne, Ween, Primus, Elton John, Meat Loaf, Rick James, and Rancid.
- This episode also spawned a record including musical performances of the guest stars featured in this episode and many others in full length. Simulated sounds of a live audience (cheering, clapping, etc.) and introductions and commentary by Chef were added in between many of the songs, making the album seem like a live recording of the Chef Aid concert featured in the episode.
- Even though Alanis Morrisette is Canadian, she isn't portrayed as Canadians usually are in the South Park universe.
- Exactly what happens to all the money in this episode is never explained.
- Kenny's head being bitten off by Ozzy Osbourne is a reference to an infamous incident when Osbourne bit the head off of a live bat during a 1982 concert, and a separate incident in which he bit the head off a live dove during a meeting with record company executives.
- The German dance Cartman does also appears in the first teaser trailer for the movie Bigger, Longer & Uncut.
- The Chef Aid album is produced by Rick Rubin.
- In the first lawsuit, the record company is the plaintiff, represented by Johnnie Cochran, while Chef is the defendant, represented by Gerald Broflovski. However, Cochran was using the "Chewbacca DEFENSE" and later, after employing this technique, claims "the DEFENSE rests".
