Chapman University is a private, nonprofit university located in Orange County, California, USA.
Research facilities include the nationally recognized A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research, Albert Schweitzer Institute, Center for Non-Profit Leadership, Ludie and David C. Henley Social Science Research Laboratory, Walter Schmid Center for International Business, Ralph W. Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship Business Ethics, Center for the Study of the Cold War Era, John Fowles Center for Creative Writing, Center for Educational and Social Equity, Barry and Phyllis Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education, Paulo Freire Democratic Project, a state-of-the-art human performance laboratory and research vivarium, food science and nutrition food-tasting and research laboratories, and a community clinic for psychological counseling and research.
In U.S. News & World Report’s 2006 rankings of the best colleges in America, Chapman University is listed as 11th among 123 master’s-level universities in the 15-state Western region. U.S. News & World Report also lists Chapman 15th in the West among its 2006 picks for best-value universities offering master’s programs. The Princeton Review’s Best 361 Colleges 2006 again listed Chapman University as one of the very select institutions chosen for the guidebook. Last year, Chapman made its debut on the The Princeton Review list, which selects only the top 15 percent of the colleges and universities in America.
Dr. James L. Doti has been president of Chapman University since 1991. Dr. Doti has received the Horatio Alger Award and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He was honored by the Council for Advancement of Education as 2003 CEO of the Year. Doti is also chairman of the Association for Independent California Colleges and Universities, He is also a member of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Council of Economic Advisors and serves on the Advisory Committee on Education Excellence.
As of June 30, 2005, Chapman University’s endowments totaled $156 million. There are 44 endowed chairs and professorships.
Chapman is accredited by and is a member of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It is also a member of the Independent Colleges of Southern California, the College Entrance Examination Board, the Western College Association, the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the Division of Higher Education of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It is also accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business International, the American Bar Association, the Institute of Food Technologists, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the Joint Review Committee of Athletic Training Standards and Guidelines, and the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy. The School of Education is a member of the American Council on Education and the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education. Its teacher training and credential programs are approved by the California State Department of Education, Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The graduate program in school psychology is fully accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists.
It is related by covenant to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), however is not considered a "religious" university. Students are not required to take religion classes and the university is open to all students.
Chapman University has had a tradition of inviting notable guests to deliver lectures. Elie Weisel, Justice Scalia, and Justice Thomas are just a few of the recent lecturers.
Chapman University's Main Campus owns the second largest piece of the Berlin Wall to be owned by an American University. It is also home to the largest free-standing marble staircase west of the Mississippi River.
In the spring of 2002, Chapman University awarded Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California, an honorary doctoral degree. The degree, the Doctor of Humane Letters, is conferred upon individuals who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments in or contributions to academia, community service, business and industry, or performance in the arts.
The $31 million, 76,000-square-foot Marion Knott Studios will be home to the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. This impressive facility will include 4,000 and 2,500-square-foot sound stages and stages for cinematography, broadcast journalism/television, foley, Dolby Digital surround sound mixing, and a green screen stage. Dedicated spaces for production management and viewing will facilitate both pre- and post-production activities. Graduate and undergraduate students in all disciplines in the Dodge College will enjoy the graphics and digital post-production labs and the seminar classrooms. The production facilities (36 digital editing suites; set construction, voice recording and ADR/foley facilities; and production design, audition, motion capture facilities) will also be open to the students as well as the new 500-seat Folino Family Cinema theater which will include both digital cinema and 35mm projection. The Erin J. Lastinger Athletics Complex will feature; Erin Chapman Stadium, Wilson Field, the Folino Family Aquatics Center, Frank E. Mary Ann O'Bryan Aquatics Stadium, and the Zee Allred Olympic Pool. The athletics complex will feature state of the art turf for field play including football, lacrosse and soccer. In adittion the aquatics facicilites will allow the men and womenn's waterpolo and swimming teams an onsite pool for the first time in Chapman's history. Chapman University will also be opening new athletics facilities consisting of Ernie Chapman Stadium, the Folino Family Aquatics Center, and Erin Lastinger Athletics Pavilion. New dining and residence halls are also in progress.
Chapman's baseball, tennis, and softball teams have combined for 6 NCAA national championships.
