Celebrity Big Brother is a British TV reality show shown on Channel Four in which a number of celebrity contestants live in an isolated house trying to avoid being evicted by the public with the aim of winning a large cash prize being donated to the winner's nominated charity at the end of the run. It is based on the Big Brother series produced by Endemol and sometimes uses the same house and presenters as the non-celebrity version.

Differences to non-celebrity version:

  • The show lasts for a much shorter time.
  • A proportion of the profits from eviction votes goes to charity.
  • The celebrities are paid for their appearance (as long as they do not quit).

The series took a break for Teen Big Brother in 2004 but now is a regular part of Channel Four's Winter schedule.

There is a version of Celebrity Big Brother named Big Brother VIP, shown in several countries.

Series 1 (March 2001)

In aid of Comic Relief six celebrities entered the Big Brother series 1 house for eight days from 9th March 2001 to 16th March 2001. As Comic Relief is shown by the BBC, this was a rare collaboration between the two TV channels. While Channel Four broadcast the usual nightly updates, BBC One also aired 10-minute updates as well as the final, which was part of the Red Nose Day telethon.

Notes

The series is remembered for comedian Jack Dee's escape from the house - he evaded security for an hour before returning ("I got all the way to Stratford") - and Vanessa Feltz angrily scrawling words on the dining table, apparently feeling the pressure of constant surveillance. It was also reported in the tabloid paper, The Sun, that Anthea Turner cooked Magic Mushrooms in the kitchen, but that is denied by her.

Series 2 (November 2002)

The second celebrity series lasted ten days, from November 20-29, 2002. Proceeds from viewer voting went to four different charities: Centrepoint, National Missing Persons Helpline, Rethink severe mental illness and Samaritans.

Notes

Les Dennis is commonly remembered for his depression during the series following his split from wife Amanda Holden.

Series 3 (January 2005)

The third series began on January 6, 2005, and ran until January 23, 2005. A percentage of phone vote funds went towards helping victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.

On the fifth day a ninth celebrity entered the house:

Nomination Notes
Housemates nominated for the third time - in fake nominations. Whilst the housemates nominated, the public were voting for who they wanted to win. Lisa was evicted the next day, and two days after, there was a double eviction, evicting Caprice and Jeremy.

Notes

This series featured the oldest and youngest ever UK Big Brother contestants (discounting Teen Big Brother): Jackie Stallone (82) and Kenzie (19). In series 7 of Big Brother (2006), Jennie Corner became the youngest contestant, aged 18.

Series 4 (January 2006)

A fourth series of Celebrity Big Brother began on 5 January 2006 and ran for three weeks until 27 January 2006. This is the first Big Brother series to be produced by Brighter Pictures, a subsidiary of Endemol UK, instead of by the parent company.

The first housemate to enter the house (and the eventual winner) was Chantelle, a girl from Essex and the first non-celebrity in a celebrity series. Her first task was to convince her celebrity housemates that she was actually a genuine celebrity herself – failure would have meant that she would have been evicted on Day 4. She was told to play the character of a pop star from the fictitious girl band "Kandy Floss", and that her biggest 'hit' was "I Want It Right Now". She succeeded in convincing the other housemates, and was allowed to stay.

On 19 January, a coat owned by Pete Burns was taken from the Big Brother house by Hertfordshire police after a series of complaints that it may be made from gorilla fur It turned out that although the coat fur was of monkey origin, it was not from an endangered species [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4631240.stm. Had the complaints been true, Burns could have faced up to five years in prison and an unlimited fine under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

In the final of this Celebrity Big Brother, there were six housemates remaining on the final day. This is a record number for the UK, including the Celebrity series and the regular series. The normal number of finalists is three or four.

19 January
On Day 15, at 12:10am, Big Brother called George and Preston to the Diary Room. As a punishment for discussing nominations on Day 13, Big Brother asked them to agree on three nominations of housemates to face the public vote. They were unaware at the time that what they were saying was being fed live into the house on the Plasma screen. Their nominations were:
  • Traci Bingham
  • Maggot
  • Rula Lenska (evicted on 20 January)

21 January
Before nominations took place, Big Brother held a Ballot to decided whether George should be permitted to nominate, as he once again had discussed nominations with a fellow housemate, breaking a fundamental Big Brother rule for the third time. Whilst nominations took place, George was not called to the diary room, showing he lost the vote. The housemates nominated were:
  • Chantelle Houghton
  • Dennis Rodman (evicted on 25 January: Second eviction)
  • George Galloway (evicted on 25 January: First eviction)

= Notes
= Rula, as wearer of the Pants of Power, had to choose one housemate to automatically face the public vote. She chose Pete. See above for more details.

George and Preston, after breaking the "no discussing nominations" rule had to nominate three of their fellow housemates together. They chose Maggot, Rula and Traci. See above for more details.

George, after discussing nominations, was banned from nominating on the third week. The eviction on Day 21 was a double eviction. See above for more details.

Ranking of fame

On day 4, the housemates were asked to arrange themselves in order of fame from most famous to least. Chantelle had to avoid being the least famous in the lineup in order to remain. She succeeded as both Preston and Maggot ranked themselves as less famous.

There was some debate among the housemates as to whether Michael Barrymore or Dennis Rodman was the most famous, given that Barrymore is very famous in the UK while Rodman has a higher profile in the US and probably globally. George Galloway argued that Michael should be ranked first, it being a British show. He also later suggested, in a conversation with Rula, that globally he may have the most fame, claiming that most of the 1.3 billion Muslims in the world know of him. The housemates ranked themselves as follows:

  1. Michael
  2. Dennis
  3. Pete
  4. George
  5. Traci
  6. Rula
  7. Jodie
  8. Faria
  9. Chantelle
  10. Preston
  11. Maggot
