Scattering (which is often a synonym for spectroscopy) deals with the physical effects of shooting electrons, protons, x-rays or subatomic particles at individual nuclei, atoms, molecules or crystalline lattices. Scattered particles may also include phonons and other quantum states in solid state physics. Scattering at high energies is usually referred to as particle physics.
