Primarily used in architecture, interior design and construction to describe a defined area, surrounded by four walls, a ceiling and a floor, with at least one door, and often windows. The term can be used to describe any enclosed space, for example, in landscape design and cave exploration (caving).

The area of a room is calculated in square meters (SQM) or square feet (SF, sq. ft.), or with other standard measures (e.g.: number of tatami mats needed to cover the floor).
