A controversial surgery is a surgery not endorsed by the overall medical community as safe or healthy. If a controversial surgery is performed, it is usually by an individual doctor of questionable background, sometimes without a physician's license, in an obscure location designed to be hidden from the mainstream world in case of failure. Most controversial procedures are not endorsed by any reputable medical association until they are tested for their medical and scientific reputability, in which case controversy may still occur within that new framework as to whether, or the best way, to perform that surgery. However, at that point the phrase controversial surgery no longer applies because the surgery has been brought into mainstream medicine.
