The Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) is a general medical journal that is published bimonthly in Canada by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
It is considered to be one of the top five general medical journals; the others being the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet and the British Medical Journal.
Free access
The electronic version of the journal is open to all and free, unlike other major medical journals. It does not have authorship charges and/or page charges and access for all people with an internet connection is free and does not require registration.
Controversy about editorial independence
On February 20, 2006, John Hoey, the last long-standing editor, was fired over an editorial independence dispute with the owners of the CMAJ, CMA Media, about Plan B, an emergency contraceptive.Branswell H. On February 28, 2006, the acting-editor, Stephen Choi and editorial fellow Sally Murray, resigned and left the journal over the same reason leaving it without any full-time editorial staff, which has raised questions about the future of the publication.CBC: Canadian Medical Association Journal loses two more editors. Editorial Fellowship
