Canada's Next Top Model (also abbreviated as CNTM) is a Canadian reality show in which ten women compete against each other to win a variety of prizes. The winner will walk away with a modeling contract from Sutherland Models, a $100 000 beauty contract from Procter & Gamble (maker of CoverGirl), and an editorial spread in Fashion Magazine. CNTM is hosted by Canadian supermodel and actor Tricia Helfer. The show airs every Wednesday at 8/7c on Citytv. A rerun is also broadcasted every Tuesday at 8/7c on A Channel.

Premise

CNTM, based upon the successful television show America's Next Top Model created and co-produced by supermodel Tyra Banks, is quite similar in its format and style to that of its American counterpart. In any given episode, there are three events that occur. They are listed below in the sequential order they appear.

The challenge
A challenge will usually focus on an element important to modeling. For example, in the first episode the girls were asked to show Jay Manuel their runway walks. A special judge, unique to the episode, will evaluate the contestants and decide the winner, who will receive a prize for their victory. The winner is then permitted to allow a certain number of other contestants to receive a similar, but lessened, reward, while the others are given nothing. For example, Heather, who won the challenge of Episode 1, was given first choice of the rooms in their house. Heather then chose Andrea to share in the prize with her.

The photoshoot

After the challenge is over with, contestants pose for the camera in a photoshoot. Photoshoots for CNTM will be conceptualized by Sima Kumar, the creative directer of the show. In a photoshoot, each model will receive a certain number of frames. Success in the competition largely relies on good photographs.

The judging and elimination

At the end of each CNTM episode, the girls are critiqued and assessed by a panel of judges consisting of Tricia Helfer, Jeanne Beker, Paul Venoit, and Stacey McKenzie. Based upon performance in the challenge, the photoshoot, as well as on the general attitude and display of the contestant, the judges deliberate and decide upon a girl to leave the competition. The last two girls, at an elimination, left are said to be in the "bottom two".

Cycle 1

Contestants

(All contestants listed in order of elimination)

  • Sylvie
  • Dawn
  • Natalie
  • Heather
  • Tenika
  • Ylennia
  • Brandi
  • Alanna
  • Andrea
  • Sisi

Episode 1: Hit the Dance Floor Running

The girls traveled in SUVs to the start line of the competition, where they were greeted by Jay Manuel, director of the photoshoots for America's Next Top Model. Jay instructed the contestants to remove their makeup so that Polaroid shots could be taken. After the shots were completed, the girls went to the Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa, and were issued their first challenge.

They were to choose an outfit from a rack of Miss Sixty clothing, valued at $50 000, that they believed represented what a model should look like. After selecting their apparel the models walked a winding, wooden, makeshift catwalk, as Jay evaluated their performance. He broke it to the girls that none of their walks were particularly good, but chose Heather Dorssers as the winner. Heather decided to share her prize, first choice of rooms in their house, with Andrea.

Once all the rooms were chosen, Tricia herself made a grand appearance, emerging from a water plane, and inviting the finalists to dinner with her at the Fairmont Empress, a classy and sophisticated hotel and restaurant. The girls prepared for their night on the town. When they arrived, Sylvie Majcher felt out of place, as she was wearing jeans and a snowboarding jacket from earlier in the day, while the other girls were dressed more appropiately.

During dessert, Helfer introduced her new protégés to her model scout friend, Kelly Strait. Kelly decided that the girl he believed had the most potential was Heather. After this was let into the open, an awkward silence ensued, the other contestants obviously jealous.

In their first photoshoot the girls were to model as "iconic" women of rock. Jay introduced the girls to CNTM's creative director, Sima Kumar. Kumar proceeded to introduce them to Brandon Hall, of Sutherland Models, who took the girls measurements and declared Tenika's body as the best of the bunch. In the shoot, Sylvie, portraying Deborah Harry, and Brandi, embodying Sade, did arguably the best jobs, while Dawn Buggins, who froze in front of the camera, did the worst.

At the judging, Tenika was scolded by Helfer for walking about topless on the set. The judges agreed that Sylvie's photograph was of high quality, but disliked her choice of dress and her attitude. They also agreed that Ylenia had the most difficult outfit to pose in, and did a good job, though Jay worried that she would not have enough range in facial expressions. Ultimately, Sylvie was eliminated for her negative attitude.

Episode 2: Float Like a Butterfly, Fight Like a Babe

The day following the elimination, the contestants went to receive their makeovers, and were greeted by Tricia, who introduced them to Greg Wencel, a top Canadian hairdresser who was also Helfer's personal stylist. The models were told to go downstairs to begin. Brandi was the first to arrive; she was immediately confused as to why there wasn't a place for her. Helfer quickly explained that she would be dealt with later. It was later explained that they were already pleased with her hair, though they believed it needed better styling; they ended up straightening it.

Tenika's hair was given extensions and colored a "warm chocolate brown". Heather, whose hair was given a "drastic" cut, was described as a "pain in the rear" by Wencel and "pissy" by Paul Venoit. Sisi's hair was made to look more "glossy" and "shiney". Alanna's hair was dyed "chestnut red" and cut shorter. Natalie's hair was lengthened and lightened. Dawn's hair was described as being reminiscent of "high school", and was darkened. A couple of inches were taken off of Ylenia's hair. Andrea was supposed to receive extensions like Tenika, colored a dark brown, however her hair was apparently so fried and damaged that it wouldn't be possible. She was initially quite upset, calling her mother for support. After some more styling and coloring, she accepted and embraced her new look, shorter and red. Venoit described Andrea's personal style as "off the money".

Sisi felt hurt and ignored, as if more attention was being focused on the girls "prettier" than her. Brandi was "happy" with her haircut. After receiving her makeover, Ylenia believed that the other girls would feel threatened by her. Tenika never thought she could look she could look so beautiful. Sisi commented on the budding friendship of Tenika and Andrea, making the observation that they were only "great friends" because neither of them thought they were direct competition for each other.

Once back at the house, both Dawn and Brandi called their boyfriends. After isolating and separating herself from the other girls, Brandi broke down into tears, saying that she "doesn't want to think they can't talk to [her". Tenika commented about Brandi, comparing her and her behaviour to that of a snake.

At the week's photoshoot Helfer was present, welcoming them to "the fight club". The photoshoot was set in a boxing ring and featured bikinis. Helfer was present during each model's session to help and guide them with posing. Sima Kumar compared Tenika's performance in the first and second shoots, stating that she had gone from "lost" and "flailing" to "bestial" and "animalistic". The photographer believed that Dawn hadn't learned to "trust herself". Natalie didn't feel comfortable in the bathing suit and was told, during her shoot, to suck in her stomach. The photographer said that Brandi needed to relax, that Ylenia has "something in her eyes", and that Sisi is a "freak" in a good way.

When the models returned to their house, a DVD was played comparing the runway walks of the previous week to that of professional models. Most of the models were embarrassed and ashamed to watch the footage. Tenika called herself a jackass. Natalie said that she wouldn't be surprised if she were eliminated because she was "too big". Sisi mocks Dawn profusely, calling her "so f*cking boring", and Brandi "* for sure" she wouldn't be sent home.

At the judging, Wencel served as guest judge. At each contestant's individual assessment, their "professional judgement" was put to the test when they were asked to select the girl they thought should be eliminated. It was revealed that four of the girls chose Sisi. Tenika was overall judged better than the previous week, though McKenzie noted that she disliked her facial expression. Heather is called "strong", but it was said that she had "trouble with her face". Alanna was told to feminize her body language. Sisi's photo was called "stunning"; Venoit in particular was ecstatic about it. Jeanne commented that Ylenia looked like a mannequin in her picture. Brandi and Dawn were in the bottom two, and Dawn was eliminated, because her "beauty" wasn't "enough".

Episode 3: Walk This Way

Upon returning home after the elimination, Andrea was quick to take Tricia's advice, shaving her arms. The next day, the contestants traveled to a bowling alley where they were greeted by a shortshort-clad Stacey McKenzie. McKenzie, a runway model herself, was to teach and evaluate the girls. The models, wearing bowling shoes, strutted their stuff down the alley, first displaying their own "personal" walks.

McKenzie was generally displeased with the performance of the girls, though she noted Alanna's as being exceptional. McKenzie expected Tenika to be more aggressive, given her usual demeanor, describing her look as "dead". She also commented that Andrea "* so much work". Stacey preceded to explain to the girls her "three-second rule", meaning that at the end of the runway, a model should strike three poses before turning around and walking back. Previously solely impressed with Alanna, McKenzie stated that Sisi took it to a "whole new level".

After their lesson in walking with McKenzie, the girls headed to a locker room where clothes were awaiting them. They were explained that they would be doing a fashion show for a rugby team. During the fashion show, Brandi "pulls a Janet Jackson", exposing her breast momentarily. During the evaluation of the walks, McKenzie notes that Brandi handled the "nip slip" professionally, that Andrea was "so awkward", that Ylenia was too "reserved", that Heather needed to give more expression, and that Natalie needed to tone down her "booty". After the models had finished, the rugby players gave their own impromptu, mock fashion show, many of them stripping their shirts. Tenika coyly introduced her newfound ally Andrea to one of the rugby players who hailed from Whitby, Ontario, her hometown. Andrea apparently received his phone number. McKenzie chose Brandi as the winner since she followed instructions to a tee. As a reward, Brandi would be treated to use of the "secret bathroom" of the house, as well as a pedicure.

Once back at the home it was evident that Natalie was not feeling as happy or well as her fellow contestants. She admitted that she was not feeling the same "vibes" as them. The models all gathered in front of the television to receive "Tricia Mail" on a DVD, in which Helfer hints to the nature of the next days photoshoot, making a remark about one's "drive", an allusion to vehicles. Meanwhile, Brandi relaxed in the jacuzzi of the "secret bathroom", drinking an expensive wine and eventually becoming intoxicated. While drunk, Brandi and a few of the other girls decided during the night to relax in the hot tub. Brandi, wearing her iPod entered the water, submerging her mp3 player and ruining it. Brandi was quite saddened by the loss of her songs, calling her boyfriend to console her.

The next day, the contestants went to a farm, which would act as the set for their next photoshoot. In the photoshoot, the girls were to model Cadillac vehicles while wearing Birk's diamonds. The $2.5 million dollar surprise advertised in commercials for the episode turned out to be the cumulative worth of the diamond-studded jewellery provided by Birk's. Natalie chided her fellow contestants in their awe of the bling-bling, musing that she was perhaps not pretentious enough for the "* industry". Phillip Bloch, who acted as a director of sorts for the girls, described that he wanted the models to exhibit restlessness, impatience and anxiety as if they were awaiting something. Alanna was relatively confused during the shoot. Bloch commented that she needed to "master" her movement. Heather was noted for her lack of emotion. Of Sisi, Bloch surmised that in a photoshoot with her there would probably be two shots that would be "magic" and sixty-eight that would be "Huh?" Brandi did quite well. Bloch said that of the seventy frames there were a "million" good shots.

At judging, Bloch made another appearance as a guest judge. The challenge for the individual assessments of the contestants again focused on the theme of walking. The girls selected a pair of shoes each, all in different and varying styles, from boxes and walked for the panel. The judges noted that Brandi's photograph was of high quality, as well as those of Ylenia and Andrea being lavishly praised. In the end, it came down to Tenika and Natalie. The latter was sent home.

Episode 4: Topping It All Off

With Natalie gone, Ylenia is now the “bigger girl” of the group and is proving to be even more self-conscious of her curves. In front of the others, Tenika and Sisi are civil, talking about their chances as the two ‘ethnic’ girls in the competition but alone, Tenika displays her venom toward Sisi. Sisi thinks Tenika is a big fake and uses a myriad of four letter words to describe how she really feels.

The next morning, the girls are cruelly awakened by the sound of a foghorn. Celebrity personal trainer Harley Pasternak is here to whip these girls into shape after a few weeks of snacking, late nights and red wine. Everyone enters the living room to meet Harley but Heather doesn’t seem to think that the wake up call applies to her. She eventually crawls out of bed to join them. The girls don their workout gear and get ready to sweat.

Harley makes the girls do a five-minute run up an incredibly steep hill. He then has them work out with weights. Sisi soon begs off claiming that she’s “too sick” to continue with the work out. She slumps in bed while the others continue. The girls are annoyed that Sisi is apparently getting special treatment. “If she’s so sick, someone should call an ambulance to take her away,” says Tenika. “Maybe in a straight jacket,” pipes up Heather.

Harley interviews the girls on their eating habits, explaining that what you eat has a significant impact on your appearance. Andrea admits she basically eats candy all day. Ylenia confesses that she doesn’t eat much at all. The biggest confession comes from Sisi, who admits to Harley that she’s not sick at all.

Brandi is the winner of today’s fitness challenge, which upsets Andrea. She feels she deserves more credit and thought that she had this challenge in the bag. Fortunately, Brandi’s prize is a night out with six of her friends. So, in the end, all the girls really win. When they go back to their rooms to get changed, Brandi and Tenika lose that winning feeling as they find an eviction notice on their bedroom door. Tenika and Brandi separate, with Brandi going into Sisi’s room because Tenika “doesn’t like Sisi’s energy.”

The evening out consists of dinner and dancing. Despite Harley’s talk, Andrea gorges herself on deserts. Sisi leaves the group to talk to other people – non-models she can relate to. Tenika describes her evening as the most amazing night of her life. She feels like “an absolute celebrity.” Andrea too feels like a celebrity and is offended at being asked for ID by the very cute bouncer.

The next morning Tenika pays for the “best night of her life.” She’s hung over and her room is a disaster. The next day is a lingerie photo shoot. But this lingerie shot is more than just bras and panties. First, the girls are told they will be working with a male co-star, who turns out to be the bouncer from the night before. Part two of the photo shoot requires the model to be topless, with the male co-star.

Alanna jumps on the male model and gets to it. She’s not the least bit shy when she has to take her bra off for the next set of photos. Ylenia is extremely uncomfortable with her co-star. She’s only ever had one boyfriend and she’s been with him for seven years. When she is told that the second part of the shoot is topless, she is visibly shaken. But she knows refusing would affect her chances so she lets her professionalism shine through. Brandi is particularly happy about working with her co-star and their chemistry is obvious. Heather’s shoot is absolutely flat and she is clearly uncomfortable. She has no idea how to move in front of the camera and Sima has to coach her through the shoot.

The girls all wonder how Andrea will react to finding a nearly naked male model on the set and then being asked to go topless. Unlike Sisi, who says that she felt comfortable because she’s had “sleepovers” before, Andrea has never been in bed with a guy. Nineteen-year-old Andrea has never been naked in front of anyone before but her doctor. Surprisingly, Andrea musters up what it takes to make the shoot work for her.

This week’s guest judge is Harley, the personal trainer who brought his fitness perspective to the discussion. Today’s judging test requires pulling together a sexy, sporty summer look from a rack of clothing and then showing it off down the runway. Most of the girls pull off this task reasonably well. Andrea still can’t walk well on the runway. Alanna makes a poor choice with shorts. Heather opts to wear her own clunky sandals instead of sexy heels, which the judges all agree is a grave mistake.

The judges deliberate over the best pictures and consider the judging test to decide which girl has to go home. Brandi’s outfit choice for the test is hot, but Harley sees that her shoulders are too drawn forward, perhaps indicating a muscle imbalance. Brandi seems to lack versatility. The judges are concerned about the drama that always surrounds Sisi, but the others love working with her and think her photographs are fantastic. Jeanne points out that Sisi’s quirkiness is the best thing about her - and the worst. Alanna only seems able to take good profile shots and she needs to work on her skin; hearing that made her cry. Andrea needs more meat on her bones.

Tenika looks like a zillion bucks on the runway but can’t pull it off in photographs. The judges think she also just seems to want to be famous and Tricia thinks she’s manipulative. As with many of the guest judges, Ylenia impresses Harley with her beauty and says her hips as giving her great proportion. Heather does not seem to have any natural sense of movement or ability to emote, despite her beauty. The judges decide Heather must take her clunky shoes walking.

Episode 5: In the Hot Seat

After Heather's elimination, Tenika confessed that she felt Heather was her choice for elimination, and that the judges were seeing what she had been seeing.

The girls then went to an old-style Victorian house for their next photo shoot. They were introduced to their co-star, a falcon named Horace. They were to pose in Victorian-style dresses with their co-star, and also put on a muted face, but with bold eyebrows.

After the shot, Tricia came to encourage the girls. She then formed a formal group shot for the girls. She wanted to create an atmosphere of a dysfunctional family.

After the shoot, the girls returned home as usual. However, great tension between Tenika and Sisi occurred the next. Sisi complained that Tenika was using her blowdryer up until 1:00 in the morning last night, and felt that Tenika showed no remorse for her fellow roommates, who were trying to get some sleep. Sisi told Tenika to stop. The next morning, Tenika asked Sisi why she would be so inconsiderate and rude. Sisi is dumbfounded, and tried to get some people for back up, as she believed that people were trying to sleep, but couldn't because of Tenika's blowdryer. No one backed her up, though. Ylenia chastised Sisi for trying to drag the other contestents into the argument.

The next challenge for the remaining six was a crash course in media training. They got a mock, on location, television interview with Jeanne Beker and print style interview with Michael Gross, author, journalist and guest judge.

Michael fired question after question to the girls. So did Jeanne. Ultimately, they picked Sisi to be the winner of the television interview test and Ylenia to win the print interview test. The girls won gift certificates to chic boutiques in Victoria, and signed copies of Jeanne and Michael's books.

At elimination, the evaluation challenge was a sequel to yesterday's challenge. Guest judge Michael Gross fired question after question, but this time, the questions were even tougher to answer.

Tenika and Ylenia ended up in the bottom 2. Tenika was the one to go, as the judges still felt that she was shooting unimpressive pictures, and that she was abrasive and manipulative.

Episode 6:Beauty Is As Beauty Poses

Andrea is overcome with tears as a result of the last elimination that sent Tenika home. “Tenika is the only one who knew exactly how I felt,” she sobs. Andrea thinks she should have gone home before Tenika and now, she doesn’t even care to be in the competition anymore.

Sisi only misses Tenika because she regrets not fighting back after the “hairdryer” incident last week. Ylenia’s ego is deflated because she had no idea she would end up in the bottom two. She doesn’t think that she’ll become “Canada’s Next Top Model”.

The house is quiet now that there are only five girls left in the competition, but it’s clear that the stress is getting to them. Tricia decides that a teaching day at the house might give the ladies some respite from the tension in the competition. Enter photographer Rob Daly. As the girls pose for him, Andrea comments that Alanna should have been eliminated rather than Tenika because of her “hockey player-like” upper body.

Since models are expected to emote, Tricia decides that the girls could use an acting class. First, she takes them through an exercise where their facial expression must go from sad to angry in ten steps. To do the exercise, Andrea first thinks of how sad she is that Tenika is gone and with each step she thinks about how angry she is with this competition. Most of the girls convincingly display their emotions except for Alanna, who giggles when she is supposed to be angry.

For the next exercise, the girls must pretend that they are house cats and crawl around the photographer’s legs. This is to help the girls get over their inhibitions, which can’t exist in the modelling world. Andrea points out that each girl is very tall, so crawling on their knees around an average sized man brings the girls awfully close to his, uhm, “other things.”

After shaking off their inhibitions and getting in touch with extreme emotions, the girls are expected to go in the opposite direction, and learn to be still and subtle for the classic, “beauty” shot. Tricia brings them one of the best beauty shot models in business, her friend, Kim. Kim instructs them individually on how to emote in an extreme close-up.

In front of the camera, each girl tries to smile with her eyes, subtly changing expressions with her lips, to look beautiful in a close, intimate shot. While Kim and Rob are impressed with everyone, they pick Brandi as the winner of the challenge. Andrea is upset that Brandi has won again and has no idea why she’s still in the competition.

Brandi’s prize is a personal video message from Jay Manuel. His advice to the winner is to keep their ego in check as conceited attitude will only ruin her. Humble is to Brandi as Paris Hilton is to modesty. How well she takes Jay’s advice is yet to be seen.

On photo shoot day, the girls have another shot at close-up modelling. Rob Daly is back to shoot them for a Pantene hair products ad. Stillness is key. Sima, the art director, notices that Brandi is beginning to look a bit haggard. Perhaps it’s too many late nights? Ylenia is as beautiful as ever but with her bone structure, she tends to photograph old. Sisi tones down her quirkiness and projects a glamorous softness. Although Sisi can transform herself, Andrea still thinks she’s phony. “I’m happy that Sisi totally humiliated herself in the first photo shoot,” Andrea hisses when out of sight of her hot tub confidante.

Being the first one finished, Andrea gets to go home early. At the house, she finds Judge Stacey McKenzie. Stacey offers more runway coaching but she really just wants to get to know the girls better. They chat and eat and the others join them later in the evening.

The next day at the elimination, the judging test requires the girls to do a “live” beauty shot. Each girl has to pose inside a picture frame in front of the judges. Brandi is the only one who giggles uncontrollably.

The judges critique each girl. Tricia says that Andrea looks too thin. Alanna still needs to show more confidence. The judges are impressed with Sisi’s performance this week, so the final two are Brandi and Ylenia. Brandi lacks versatility despite her determination and experience, while Ylenia can transform into any role, but her future in the youth-oriented business is limited by her bone structure.

Finally, the judges give their heartbreaking decision, sending Ylenia home. The other girls cannot believe it. Although she is sad, Ylenia says she feels blessed to have gotten as far as she has.

Episode 7:Get ready, get set, go see!

Despite their collective expertise, the judges’ opinions don’t count for much as far as Brandi is concerned. “Are you seriously, like, judging me?” says Brandi behind the scenes. Her ego comes on strong as soon as the judges backs are turned and she expresses that she would have some choice words for them should she be eliminated. After being told by the judges that she continues to lack versatility, Brandi is still reluctant to accept their advice.

The judges think Andrea lacks energy in her photographs and are concerned she is not eating enough. Like Brandi, Andrea thinks they’re completely wrong, and tells us that it’s the competition wearing her down.

With Ylenia gone, the house seems very quiet. Andrea is annoying Alanna because whenever someone is eliminated Andrea says that she wishes it was her instead. Alanna thinks she’s just taking up space in the competition. Sisi says the girls are making her crazy, “literally.”

Brandi doesn’t think Sisi should win the competition because Sisi was not born in Canada. To Brandi, the accident of being born in Canada gives her a greater sense of entitlement to be “Canada’s Next Top Model” than Sisi. Photos and runway skills be damned.

This week’s photo shoot is brought to the mansion, in the form of a home gym. The shoot is called, “Work It Out, Girl,” and spoofs the 1980s home work out. Imagine Jane Fonda or Olivia Newton-John. The problem is, these girls were born in the eighties, but they don’t actually remember them. Each had three shots. One on a Stairmaster, another on a yellow, inflated dinosaur and the last holding some food and colourful condiments.

Andrea loves the shoot because she gets to show her pearly whites for the first time. Her teeth are newly straight and she’s proud of them. Everyone can see that Brandi isn’t giving her all with this shoot which is not intended to be safe or conventional. Brandi’s expressions only become more extreme and authentic when she pours milk on her body. The splash of cold seems to shake things up. Alanna’s athletic past is well-suited for this shoot and she gives great lines with her body. Sisi, much to everyone’s disappointment, forgets her own presentation and gets lost with the props given to her (a hotdog and bottle of mustard).

On elimination day, the girls’ judging test consists of creating an eccentric look for an eccentric designer. The girls only have some make up and hair products to pull this off. Sisi’s look is reminiscent of 1960s mod, with pale lips. Brandi puts some lipstick on her eyelids. Andrea makes herself look more like a clown than couture, while Alanna hits the mark with the right blend of pretty and edgy.

The judges deliberate with guest judge, Sarah Bancroft, Western Editor of FASHION magazine. Alanna is unmemorable in person but turns into a chameleon in front of the camera. Paul thinks Brandi’s partying is showing on her face. The judges decide that Andrea has the best shots this week, while Sisi, who started out strong, had no real evolution.

In the end, it comes down to Sisi and Brandi. Do the judges pick Sisi, whose progress has stalled? Or do they send Brandi home because she lacks the “high fashion” look?

The judges decide to say goodbye to Brandi and she has some choice words for them. “You guys made a big mistake….but thanks anyway,” she says bitterly holding back tears. Not the agressive disagreement that she promised, but fighting back tears, Brandi walks away – no hugs and kisses for the remaining three.

With the love gone from the competition and nearing the end, who will stand triumphant as Canada’s Next Top Model? Find out next week!
