The British Pharmacopoeia is the authoritative collection of standards for UK medicinal substances. Produced under the auspices of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency it is an essential reference point for everyone involved in research, development and manufacture of formulated (medicinal) preparations and veterinary substances. The British Pharmacopoeia standard references and is referenced by the European Directorate on the Quality of Medicines ^*.

It is often adopted by countries all around the world that do not publish their own standards, for example, Australia and Korea [http://dric.sookmyung.ac.kr/resource/r201_4.html.

There are equivalents in many other countries, such as the United States (USP) and Japan and the World Health Organisation maintains the "International Pharmacopoeia" [http://www.who.int/medicines/publications/pharmacopoeia/overview/en/.

The British National Formulary contains information on prescribing, indications, side effects and costs of all medication drugs available on the National Health Service.
