Geography
The city of Borlänge received its
Royal charter in
1944 after several smaller towns merged. With its 40,880 inhabitants, Borlänge is the largest city in
Dalecarlia (
Dalarna), surpassing its northern neighbour
Falun, 20 kilometres away. Together the two cities form a region with close to 100,000 inhabitants.
Politics
Currently ruling leader is
Peter Hultqvist, from the
Swedish Social Democratic Party.
Opposition leader is
Ulla Olsson, from the
Moderate Party. At municipals in
Dalarna where a blue collar culture is dominant, the Social Democrats hold a strong
position. As a result of the
Swedish municipal elections, 2002 they are currently in a
majority in the
city council with 31 of 61
mandates.
Youngest candidate to the Swedish municipal elections, 2006 is Carl-Oskar Bohlin, from the Moderate Party as the third candidate on their list. He is also the chairman of Moderate Youth League in Dalarna. The chairman of Moderate Youth League in Borlänge is Erik Hällman.
Industry
Borlänge has always been an industrial town surrounding the iron mill of
Domnarvet (
SSAB) and the paper mill of
Kvarnsveden (
Stora Enso). The city has two state authorities: the department of rails (
Banverket) and the department of roads (
Vägverket). Suitable for a city which structure is severely divided by rails and roads, with a modern city centre.
Shopping
Borlänge promotes itself as The Number One Shopping City in
Dalarna. This is
possible due to the Kupolen
area, situated slightly
west of the city centre. The Kupolen area includes Kupolen ('The
Dome')
Shopping Centre (Kupolen Köpcentrum in
Swedish, "Tunatutten" in every day language) and the surrounding
region. Though the
district was
first built to
catch the interest from bypassers it has withdrawn the
focus from the nearby
downtown area and has overtaken the
role as the pulsating
heart of Borlänge.
Sport
The city has a previously successful football team, although currently in a free fall through the series.
IK Brage, named after the Norse god of poetry, has a history of 18 seasons in the Swedish Premier Division (
Allsvenskan).
Brage play in green and white and host their home games at
Domnarvsvallen Stadium in Borlänge with a
seating capacity of 6,500.
