Bomberman Hero is an action video game sequel to Bomberman 64 for the Nintendo 64. Bomberman Hero is more advanced in terms of gameplay, as well as having more levels, bosses, weapons, and character moves. However, it lacks multiplayer and therefore focuses on the single player action.
Story
The story is almost a complete copy of
Star Wars, with a princess stealing data from an evil empire, and she safely smuggles out the information through a robot, but is captured herself. Bomberman is training in the
headquarters when news arrives about the
princess being captured. The Empire claims back the disks to rebuild Bagular, whose body was destroyed in Super Bomberman 3. Despite the upgrade, Bagular fails, but a mysterious villain was controlling him from Planet Gossick. It is Evil Bomber, exacting revenge from Bomberman GB 3. He is defeated as well.
Gameplay
Bomberman Hero controls very differently from
Bomberman 64. In
Hero the
character can jump, has more lives, faces tougher bosses, and has the ability to throw
bombs farther. There are several different areas to be encountered, each with about five different stages. A unique feature is that it's possible to play with an extra advancement, such as a
jet pack or a
submarine.
There are also several different types of bombs in addition to the regular ones. Cherry bombs provide bigger explosions. Ice bombs turn enemies into a block of ice which can be moved around and used to jump on to get to higher places. Salt bombs only harm slugs. Control bombs explode when remotely detonated; an ability useful against some bosses.
Trivia
- This was technically the first mainstream Bomberman title to use elemental bombs (especially ice), albeit temporarily.
- The song in the background of the Select Screen and several cut scenes is a remixed version of the theme song most prevalent in the Turbo Grafx 16 version of Bomberman.
- In the Sound Check option, Bomberman is playing a guitar which looks quite a bit like a red Jackson Kelly guitar.
