A Bloodhound (also known as the St. Hubert Hound) is a large breed of dog bred for the specific purpose of tracking human beings. Consequently, it is often used by authorities to track escaped prisoners, missing children, or earthquake victims. It is a scenthound, famed for its ability to follow a scent many days old, over vast distances. It possesses the keenest sense of smell of any breed of dog, as well as an extremely strong tracking instinct. Bloodhounds are one of the most affectionate and friendly breeds of dog, known as "Gentle Giants."
Bloodhounds are extremely loyal companions, and if separated from their masters for long periods of time are known to mourn and stop feeding as a sign of distress. Affectionate, gentle, and even-tempered, they make excellent family pets but, like any large breed, may require supervision when around small children because of the possibility of knocking them over with their bulk.
The Bloodhound is prone to hip dysplasia, and is the breed that is the most frequent victim of bloat. Consequently, the American Bloodhound Association is attempting to concentrate funds for research into bloat at a small number of veterinary schools, in order to increase the likelihood of obtaining valuable results.
In the American antebellum South, the Bloodhound was frequently used to track runaway slaves, which accounts for the large number of Bloodhounds and breeders still located in that region. Bloodhounds, which are almost always used in a pack, do not attack upon reaching their quarry, as many erroneously believe, but surround him and bay, alerting the searchers.
Since the Bloodhound relies on shed skin cells for its tracking ability, it can only be used to track living people. If searchers are reasonably certain that the target has died (as, after the second day or so, in the World Trade Center attacks), they will use cadaver dogs, frequently German Shepherds.
Ch. Whatisname's Amazing Amethyst is the sire of the renowned Bloodhound Nash, who enjoys the extraordinary distinction of having forged a career and acquired his fame and renown without ever entering a show, by virtue of his unusually keen intuition, striking appearance, and captivating personality. Nash was bred by Michelle and David Mahan, of Indianola, Illinois, and whelped by St. Valentine's Day Liver & Onions Massacre, on June 19, 1999. Nash's owner and constant companion is Allen Roth, a native New Yorker, noted bon vivant, sophisticated raconteur and debonair man-about-town. Nash is virtually unique among dogs in being welcome, with his owner, in most of the finer bars, pubs and saloons in Manhattan. Both were present at one such establishment during the September 11, 2001 attacks, less than two miles from Ground Zero. On that fateful morning, Nash perceived the gravity of the situation by 9:30 am, well before the Trade Center towers collapsed, and was on the phone to his broker immediately. Nash has saved several lives, including his owner's. On one celebrated occasion, Nash pulled the latter from the Pulitzer Fountain at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, where he had fallen face down while in pursuit of a vision of Monty Woolley, after several boilermakers too many at the Blue Bar in the nearby Algonquin Hotel. For this and three similar exploits in which alcohol and various bodies of water were involved, Nash was given the coveted No. 1 Dog Award, personally presented by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The award consists of a Tiffany silver fireplug with three Milk-Bone clusters, and an engrossed parchment certificate with the circumstances of the award, signed and notarized by the Governor of New York, suitable for framing. Nash's formal cognomen, used on the certificate, is Ch.-Not Sherlock’s Nash Bridges Spectacular Private Eye.
