Birds Australia was previously known as the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union until a change of name in 1996. It was founded in 1901 to promote the study and conservation of the native bird species of Australia, making it the oldest national birding association of that country. It has joined the BirdLife International partnership of bird and habitat conservations groups.
Birds Australia operates reserves at Gluepot and Newhaven Station. It publishes a quarterly magazine, Wingspan, for its members, as well as the ornithological journal Emu, now over 100 years old, which concentrates on the birdlife of the Southern Hemisphere, particularly Australia and Antarctica.
Birds Australia also operates two observatories. Eyre Bird Observatory (established in 1977) and Broome Bird Observatory (established in 1988). Both observatories provide accommodation and courses for people interested in birdwatching and other nature based activities. The observatories are largely self-funded but also rely on donations from members and the general public.
The organisation has produced a series of volumes know as HANZAB (The Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds). The books contain extensive information on every species on the Australian bird list.
