In Hinduism, Bhumidevi, who may also be called Bhumi, is the goddess of the earth.

She had a son, Naraka, by the asura Hiranyaksa. She is sometimes considered to be the mother of all the asuras.

She is sometimes regarded as the wife of Vishnu, who rescued her from Hiranyaksa. She had a son, Mangala and Vishnu is the father.

She is considered to be the mother of Sita, (note the symbolism of the baby Sita being found in a ploughed field). According to the uttara-kanda, when Sita finally leaves her husband Rama, she returns to Bhumi.

In the words a local believer visiting an underground temple to Bhumidevi in Hampi, Karnataka: "This is the temple of Bhumidevi. Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, they are *nothing*, they are like this span between thumb and forefinger, little men. Bhumidevi is everything face lights up. This to ground is Bhumidevi, I am Bhumidevi." She was entirely convinced and spookily convincing. It would appear that Bhumidevi equates to an Earth Goddess, to Pachamama.
