The name Motu One, meaning "Sand Island" is a generic term for a low-lying, sandy islet which cannot sustain permanent habitation. A group of islets bearing this name, Motu One, is in the Leeward group of the Society Islands; it is also known as Bellinghausen or Bellingshausen, being thus named by the expolrer Otto von Kotzebue after Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. It should not be confused with Bellingshausen Island in the southwest Atlantic. Another coral atoll called Motu One is the only atoll in the Marquesas Islands.
