The Battle of Tagliacozzo was fought on August 23, 1268 between the French forces of Charles of Anjou and the Italian/Spanish/Roman/Arab/Germans, led by Conradin. Conradin's forces won the first encounter, but Charles' reserve forces entered the fight and massacred Conradin's forces while they where plundering the enemy camp. Conradin was forced to flee back to Rome, but was later captured and imprisoned. This defeat ended the rule of the Hohenstaufens.
