Barton St David is a village and parish in Somerset, England, situated five miles south east of Glastonbury and five miles north east of Somerton in the South Somerset district. The village has a population of 538.

Notable Inhabitants


Barton St David was the birthplace of Henry Adams (1583-1646), who emigrated with his wife Edith and nine children to the new colonies in Massachusetts. He was the grandfather of John Adams, the first Vice-President and second President of the United States. He was the great-grandfather of John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States.

There is a plaque in the parish Church which commemorates this link between the village and the United States.

Events


Several Events are held annually in Barton St David, most notably:

The Carnival - The local village folk get together to take part in various fun and games, as well as being entertained by some wannabe bands. Average attendance: 107

The Raft Race - Some merry sailors take part in an intense race on some wobbly vessels liable to sink at the turnaround point. The most notable happening of the race was when one year a team craftily entered with a poorly disguised upside down rubber dinghy. Average attendance: Participating: 32 Watching: 3 and 1 dog

Harvest Supper - A fine selection of oldies and other inhabitants gather to be treated with some nourrisment from the harvest before being treated to the smallest pieces of apple pie ever. Average attendance: 94

Fun Run - A bunch of squirts run round the block while others run across a wide range of tricky terrains, such as grass and asphault. Average attendance: Participating: 70 Watching: 0
